Permanent Makeup Removal Process

Laser resurfacing is the most popular procedure for permanent makeup removal. A laser emits a highly focused beam of light that passes harmlessly through the outer layer of the dermis. This light is then absorbed primarily by the pigment of permanent makeup, and quickly converts to heat. As the heat increases, the pigment breaks into tiny particles that are then eliminated by the body. At Women's Health and Cosmetic Services of Maryland, we use the Pico Second, which is commonly considered to be the most effective laser in permanent makeup removal.

Is Permanent Makeup Removal Safe?

The color of the makeup will play a role in the results, due to the varying absorption range of the pigment itself. Your skin type may also impact the results. Although the Q-Switched laser is safe to use on all skin types, pigment removal is more difficult on lighter skin. Before beginning laser resurfacing, it is important to have realistic expectations.

What challenges are posed with permanent makeup removal?

The process is similar to laser tattoo removal, which is one of the most commonly performed procedures at Women's Health and Cosmetic Services of Maryland,. However, because permanent makeup usually uses a modified version of tattoo ink, it can oxidize during the treatment, making it more difficult to remove. In addition, since permanent makeup is typically applied to the eyes and eyebrows, it must be removed very carefully. Laser removal in the eye area can be very difficult, and potentially dangerous. Likewise, lasers are rarely used for the removal of permanent lip liners or color, due to the high density of blood vessels on the lips.

Is Permanent Makeup Removal Painful?

Protective eye-wear will be worn during the treatment. Most patients experience little discomfort during the procedure. The sensation of the pulses entering the skin is often compared to the quick snap of a rubber band. If this is something that makes you uncomfortable, we can offer a topical anesthesia.

What to Expect From Permanent Makeup Removal?

The length of the procedure depends on the size of the treatment area. Often treatments are completed within ten to thirty minutes. There is no downtime following the treatment, although the treated area may be sensitive. You may experience slight swelling and the treatment area may appear whitish in color. Swelling and whiteness will diminish approximately thirty minutes after the procedure.

You may notice lightening of the skin in the area that is treated.  However, at Women's Health and Cosmetic Services of Maryland, we use Pico Second lasers in conjunction with other techniques to safely remove permanent makeup, which can avoid the limitations and potential side effects of the laser only approach.
