Chemical Peels - Skin Tone and Texture Rejuvenation in Baltimore, MD

Chemical peels are great way to improve and smooth the texture of your skin without use of laser or other energy-based treatments. At Women’s Health and Cosmetic Services of Maryland, we offer a wide range of chemical peels to women residing in and around Baltimore, Annapolis and Glen Burnie, MD.

What is a Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel is a non-surgical, medical-grade, anti-aging treatment that is intended to remove the outermost layers of the skin by utilizing safe chemicals of varying strengths. Chemical peels exfoliate the skin, removing dead skin and surface bacteria to reveal healthy, new skin.

What Issues Do Chemical Peels Help Correct?

Medical-grade chemical peels are most commonly used to address:

  • Sun damage (sun spots)
  • Age and brown spots
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Uneven skin tone and texture
  • Improve acne-prone skin
  • Minimize clogged pores

What are the Benefits of Chemical Peels?

Our full range of superficial and deep peels can help your complexion appear more uniform and renewed. A chemical peel helps to strip your skin of dead, sluggish layers to reveal a healthy, more vibrant appearance. Chemical peels help to diminish signs of aging such as fine lines and wrinkles as well as help to control acne and other skin conditions. Chemical peels treat a variety of skin conditions, including signs of aging, acne, hyperpigmentation, sun damage, uneven texture and tone.

What Type of Problems Can Chemical Peels Improve?

Sun-damage, fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage, uneven skin coloring, age spots, poor skin texture, large pores and acne scarring can all be improved with chemical peels.

What Type of Problems Can't Be Fixed With Chemical Peels?

Chemical peels do not improve very deep lines or wrinkles, tighten very loose skin, or remove deep scars.

What Areas Can Be Treated with Chemical Peels?

Although chemical peels are used mostly on the face, they can also be used to improve the skin on your neck and hands.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Chemical Peel?

Most healthy people are good candidates for chemical peels, and the likelihood of complications is very rare. As always, it’s important to share a clear representation of your medical history before your treatment to ensure your candidacy.

Generally speaking, good candidates for chemical peels have superficial skin issues, such as fine lines and wrinkles, minor blemishes, rough patches, hyperpigmentation, flaky skin, sun spots and other imperfections.

The best way to determine if a chemical peel is an ideal solution for your situation is to schedule a free consultation at our Glen Burnie office. During your consultation, we will evaluate your skin, address your questions and concerns and recommend the best peel or alternative treatment for you.

Who is Not a Good Candidate for Chemical Peels?

Patients with very dark complexion, a history of abnormal scarring, and those who have recently used certain medications such as Accutane are not good candidates for chemical peels.

What Do I Need to Do to Prepare for a Chemical Peel?

Prior to coming to our Glen Burnie offices for your peel, you’ll need to be sure you don’t have microdermabrasion done for at least two weeks prior. Also, no depilatory hair removal treatments or waxing for at least a week prior to your peel. The same goes for any injectables, such as Botox. It’s important to stay out of the sun for at least 10 days before your peel. We’ll discuss this with you prior to your peel, but you’ll need to stop taking certain medications for a period of time before your peel, as they can interact with the peeling agents. These are most commonly photosynthesizing drugs, which increase sensitivity to sunlight. They include anti-inflammatory medications, antihistamines, antimicrobials, certain contraceptives, and other medications. If you’re on the acne medication isotretinoin, you need to have completed your treatment for at least six months prior to having a chemical peel.

How Often Can I Get a Chemical Peel?

There are limitations on the frequency you can have chemical peels, depending on the peeling agent. Superficial peels have no limitations. Patients often come in once a month for these peels to keep boosting their skin cell turnover. Medium peels can only be done quarterly. Deep peels are a once-in-a-lifetime event.

What to Expect from Chemical Peel Treatment?

Depending on the level of the peel you choose, you can expect the face to itch and peel from a few days to a couple weeks. One of our team members will talk about methods to care for your skin during your consultation. Please keep in mind that no matter how much your skin itches during the post-treatment process, it is never helpful to pick the skin off. You could cause scarring to your delicate skin!

What are the Risks of Chemical Peels?

Chemical peels are usually a very safe procedures, however there are some risks. One risk is hyperpigmentation (brown spots). This can usually be avoided by using sunscreen and avoiding sun exposure during the peeling phase. Though very rare, infection or scarring can also occur. Patients who have had cold sores (herpes) in the past are at risk of re-activation and should take medication prior to treatment. Those who have a history of keloids or any unusual scarring tendencies should avoid treatment or take extra precaution.

How Long Does a Typical Chemical Peel Treatment Last?

Chemical peels typically take 20 minutes to apply, and the depth of peel you’ve chosen determines your amount of downtime. Tolerance to the procedures varies by individual, but the side effects, such as tingling or slight burning sensations, are minimal and subside within minutes of the completion of your session.

The exfoliation and skin cell regeneration achieved with our chemical peels is permanent. Obviously, shed skin cells and rebuilt areas of new skin are permanent improvements in your skin. But your skin completely turns over about every 27 days (this cycle slows as we age), so you’re continually dealing with new skin. How long you can enjoy your refreshed, rejuvenated skin is up to you, to a degree. Protect it from sun damage and keep it moisturized and you’ll enjoy the improvements for weeks with medium peels.

Will I Have Any Recovery After a Chemical Peel?

Light peels are very easy to take. If these are new to your skin, initially light peels may cause some minor redness and irritation. But as your skin sheds the dead outer cells and becomes accustomed to these, your skin will simply glow after your peel. Medium peels — There will be some recovery with these peels, as the trichloroacetic acid penetrates more deeply into the dermis layer beneath the epidermis. These peels can leave your skin red and stinging. You will have some crusting, as well. Depending on your skin, facial redness can linger for a couple of weeks.

How Quickly Will I See Chemical Peel Treatment Results?

After your peel, you can see a brighter, rejuvenated reflection looking back at you from the mirror. Each of our various peels works differently, but most of them require only a limited amount of downtime. For light and some medium peels, patients sometimes report minor side effects such as mild redness or itching. You may see some flaking as skin resurfacing occurs and outer, damaged layers are removed, revealing more beautiful skin beneath. Stronger chemical peels will produce more redness and flaking, which may require more downtime.

LIGHT PEELS

You can have a light chemical peel on your lunch break and get back to your day. This strength of peel will remove the top layer of skin (the epidermis), giving your complexion a brighter appearance and softer texture. We typically suggest that you get a light treatment around once a month for the best glowing results.

MEDIUM-DEPTH PEELS

This strength of chemical peel penetrates deeper into your skin, and you’ll usually prefer to do this level of facial rejuvenation treatment over a long weekend. You may also prefer to prepare yourself for more discomfort during and around an hour after chemical peel. Medium-depth peels are best for patients who have significant damage to their skin such as deeper wrinkles and darker pigmentation issues.

DEEP PEELS

The most advanced of the three types of chemical peels is the deep peel treatment, and it will require the most recovery time. This is an aggressive cosmetic treatment that could leave your face swollen, peeling, and itchy for several weeks. Patients who receive a deep peel typically have dark age spots, sun-damaged skin, significant acne scars, or deep-seated scars. As this strength of peel is typically uncomfortable for most patients, we will provide you with mild anesthesia prior to your procedure.
