What is Botox®?

Our facial expressions such as smiling, laughing and frowning cause the facial muscles to contract creating folds and deep wrinkles. These lines can make you look older, tired, sad or angry. BOTOX is an easy fix that not only prevents the formation of fine lines, but also over time reduces signs of aging. BOTOX is administered through a series of small injections and can last for up to six months with no downtime and little to no discomfort. BOTOX is a highly effective, minimally invasive treatment that drastically improves the skin’s overall appearance. Our trained staff will help determine the best treatment plan based on one’s personal skin needs.

How does Botox® Work?

BOTOX is a neurotoxin that, when injected into muscles, relaxes them from motion for a period of time. When used cosmetically to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, it does so by temporarily blocking the nerve activity in the muscles surrounding the wrinkle, preventing the muscle from forming the motion that created the wrinkle or crease. The result is a smoother, wrinkle-free skin surface.

What are the benefits of Botox®?

One of the reasons Botox treatments are so popular is that it delivers predictable and subtle results you'll see within just a few days – all with little or no downtime.

Besides smoothing out the aging effects of forehead lines and crow's feet, Botox treatment can make you look - and even feel - less stressed. The relaxing effect Botox has on muscles reduces their appearance and keeps the muscles from contracting in ways that deepen them. Simply not using these muscles typically used to furrow that brow can make you feel less stressed.

Botox is also used to treat neurological disorders that cause muscle weakness, as well as for migraines, excessive sweating, and other medical conditions.

Am I a Candidate for Botox®?

The best Botox candidates are those who are at least 18 years old, physically healthy, not pregnant or nursing, and don’t have a history of neuromuscular diseases such as myasthenia gravis or multiple sclerosis.

Here are some of the other essential characteristics of a good candidate for Botox:

  • Mature adults with healthy skin with moderate elasticity, but is starting to show signs of aging
  • Has realistic goals and expectations for improvement
  • The wrinkles and lines are found in areas that Botox can treat effectively such as around the neck, on the forehead, or between the eyes
  • The wrinkles are moderate to severe

In general, Botox is most suitable for improving the appearance of dynamic wrinkles. These are wrinkles that develop due to the muscle contractions when a person makes natural movements on their face.

Essentially, the wrinkles that form when a person smiles, frowns, gets angry, cries, or laughs are considered dynamic wrinkles. These are different from static wrinkles, which may be present on the person’s face regardless of the movements they make, due to loss of volume and other skin deficiencies.

Who is NOT a Suitable Candidate for Botox®?

Below are some of the characteristics of someone who is not suitable for Botox:

  • Has an allergy to any of the ingredients in Botox (e.g. the protein found in eggs is also the same protein found in Botox)
  • Has a severe infection or illness, including neuromuscular conditions or diabetes
  • Is taking medications, such as antibiotics that are aminoglycosides, which can interfere with the effects of Botox
  • Has very thick facial skin or deep facial scars
  • Has ptosis (or drooping eyelids) or any other existing weakness in any of the target muscles
  • Has significant facial asymmetry

What Can I Expect from Botox® Injection?

Botox cosmetic injections are most effective on moderate to severe forehead lines, crow’s feet, and frown lines between the eyebrows in adults. These are dynamic wrinkles formed by facial muscles when squinting, smiling, and furrowing the brow. Botox helps relax these muscles and makes wrinkles less visible.

  • Forehead wrinkles

Sometimes referred to as “worry lines,” these horizontal lines across the forehead are the first to show signs of aging because we use these muscles a lot.

  • Frown lines

Also known as “the 11s,” are the vertical lines between the eyebrows that scrunch up and can make you look tired, sad, or mad.

  • Smoker’s lines

Also known as lip lines or perioral wrinkles, these are those fine vertical lines that form around the mouth. You don’t have to be a smoker to develop these lines, which appear when you purse your lips.

  • Crow’s feet

These are the fine lines around the corners of your eyes that show up when you laugh or smile.

  • Laugh lines

These wrinkles show up around the sides of your mouth.

  • Marionette lines

These wrinkles run vertically between the mouth and chin on either side of the nose.

  • Gummy smile

A smile that exposes too much of the gum line is known as a “gummy smile.”

  • Neck bands

These appear when the muscles in the neck begin to sag.

Will Botox® Results Show Right Away?

No. Patients that receive BOTOX injections start noticing a difference in their facial muscles about two to seven days after the injections. Full effect of the BOTOX injection can take up to two weeks.

What Should I Avoid after Botox® Treatment?

For 4 hours after treatment, you need to keep your head and neck upright. Do not bend over, lie flat, or place your head against a pillow. Allow at least 4 hours to pass before touching, pressing, or manipulating the treated areas.

How often Do I need Botox® Injections?

Typically, when you begin BOTOX injections you will need to repeat the process every three to four months. Patients report that with repeated injections they can go longer in between treatments. Some patients have their BOTOX injections once per year because they have been getting this highly effective wrinkle treatment on a regular basis.

How Much Does Botox® Injection Cost?

The cost of Botox® Injection will depend on each patient and their particular needs. All costs will be discussed during your personal consultation.
